Bulging brick wall repair.
A bulging wall (called a “ventre de bœuf” in Quebec) is a brick wall that bows outward. The veneer pulls away from the structure and the wall starts to look wavy. Repointing won't fix it: it has to be taken down and rebuilt.
What causes a brick wall to bulge?
A brick wall bulges when the brick veneer pulls away from the structure behind it. You can spot it by the waves in the wall and crumbling mortar joints. Maçonnerie Premium repairs it in Laval, on the North Shore and in Montreal by taking the wall down to the foundation and rebuilding it straight.
Signs to watch for.
- “The wall looks wavy when you look at it from the side.”
- “The mortar crumbles and falls on the lawn.”
- “Some bricks are cracked or shifted.”
- “Water gets in through the brick.”
If you wait, water can reach the wood framing behind the brick. The repair then becomes much more expensive.
